Scents of the season

Honeysuckle season has come into full bloom, with the hot weather bringing out lovely scents. The fragrance is so strong that it is evident from down the block. This is the best season for our front porch!

Since we have lots of foot traffic in our neighborhood, it is also a friendly time of year. Neighbors pause a moment while walking their dogs to say hello and sniff the honeysuckle. Even strangers slow down and walk more slowly so they can breathe in the sweet smell.

Sweet Scent of Honeysuckle

When I planted the honeysuckle, I had no idea it would be so wonderful. My main goal was to cover an ugly chain link fence that surrounds our front yard. Every year I think about replacing the fence, but somehow our money finds other priorities, and now it is well covered with vines.

I know we could still be neighborly and strike up conversations without the honeysuckle, but it is a pleasant addition to the sidewalk, and in some small way brings a smile.

My friend Mary Beth Lagerborg talks about front porches and mentions my honeysuckle in her book Dwelling. She emphasizes living well from the space you call home, and for me, the porch and garden are a key space!

This brings back many childhood memories for me – tasting the honeysuckle from the bushes in our back yard and mmmmm……the smells are indeed wonderful!
